RWC 2011 Venues
As part of its philosophy of a "Stadium of Four Million", 13 venues across New Zealand will host matches for Rugby World Cup (RWC) 2011.
Stadium Christchurch and Wellington Regional Stadium will each host two quarter-finals with the Final, Bronze Final and both semi-finals to be played at Eden Park in Auckland.
The Tournament will kick off at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday September 9, 2011 when New Zealand will play Tonga.
Auckland (Eden Park), Wellington and Christchurch have been allocated five pool matches each while North Shore, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Rotorua and Dunedin will each host three matches. Whangarei, Nelson, Palmerston North, Napier and Invercargill will host two matches.
The selection of host venues in March 2009 came after the culmination of a 22 month process that has involved 18 regions around New Zealand applying to host either a match or a team or both.
The RWC 2011 Final, Bronze Final and semi-finals will be played at a redeveloped Eden Park in Auckland. The key improvements are:
• A new three-tier South Stand with 52 corporate boxes;
• A new, unroofed two-tier East Stand (replacing the eastern terraces);
• Extension of the North Stand with a 2,000 seat lower bowl
• Internalisation of pedestrian movement, within the Eden Park site. Public
concourses in the east and west connecting all stands with transport centre and
providing access to Kingsland railway station via Walters Road;
• A transport hub in the south west of the Park with bus parks for drop off and
pick up;
• Increased landscaping around the Park perimeter;
• 10,000 high quality demountable seats above the East and West stands to bring
capacity up to 60,000 for RWC 2011.
